Here’s my tips to get over a bug quickly, as well as support everyone’s immune systems through the sick season. I recently had a cold, and kicked the bulk of it within 4 days. Not bad!
Sovereign Silver
Sovereign Silver is a premium silver supplement for immune support. Silver is found naturally in mushrooms, whole grains, mammalian milk, and water. It’s been used for medicinal purposes for over 2,000 years, and was very popular in the 1930’s before antibiotics were developed. There is always concern of too much silver collecting in the body, but the truth is, your body can take absorbing quite a bit. For a person who’s 125 pounds, they could take over a 100 drops of colloidal silver each day. Additionally, brands like Sovereign Silver are the purest and will not create harmful side effects if used properly. As long as you follow proper dosage instructions from the company, you’ll be fine!
I bought a large bottle, and keep refilling my smaller spray bottle. We spray it in our mouths and the kids’ mouths. You can even spray it on your eye for Pink Eye, or any type of rash or irritation on the skin.
Elderberry Syrup and Gummies
Elderberry syrup is a fantastic immune support tool. It’s very dark, and can stain really easily, so with my little ones and my own clumsy hands, I get elderberry gummies. These gummies have added vitamin C, zinc, and taste delicious. They are easy for everyone to take. At this time of year, these should be given to everyone with their daily vitamins.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C supports immune health, but it’s also incredibly important for many functions of the body like the heart, hormones, eyes, collagen production, and can even prevent gout! Just like B complex vitamins, C is water-soluble. It has to be replaced daily because it washes out of our bodies quickly. Supplementing provides insurance of getting proper amounts; especially when our diets may not contain enough vitamins and minerals. Taste and convenience are important with kids. These vitamin C gummies from Nordic Naturals are better than candy and pack a punch of vitamin C for your little ones and adults. Nordic Naturals is a brand I really trust, and I’ve been using their products for nearly four years.
Vitamin D
These vitamin D gummies are also from Nordic Naturals. If you give them to your children, keep these and the vitamin C in a place they can’t get them! Vitamin D is a major building block of our immune health, but lack of sun in winter hinders our ability to get proper amounts. I give my kids these gummies because I know that in the winter we are deficient in vitamin D. 1,000 IU is really nothing since they get 20,000 IU from a half hour of sunshine (without sunscreen) in the summer. If you’d rather give your kids the actual kids version, Nordic Naturals makes them here.
Probiotics
Why probiotics? Our soil doesn’t have enough of the beneficial bacteria it used to because of improper farming practices and environmental pollution. Our intestinal tracts get seeded with too much sugar, chemicals, and other foods that make way for bad bacteria to fester and promote illness. Our bodies thrive off of beneficial bacteria. Ear infections are many times brought on by an overgrowth of bad bacteria. Probiotics help tremendously. Our whole family takes this to create “healthy soil” in our bellies. ION strengthens your gut lining so that your microbiome can diversify on its own.
Final Tips for Immune Support
In addition to using the above supplements and trying to quarantine when there’s a serious virus, here are other simple things that help our bodies recover and heal:
Sleep and Rest
We push ourselves more than ever, and this is especially true when you have kids. There is so much going on all the time. Make sure everyone is getting into bed early, and getting plenty of sleep. If your kids are going through a frustrating sleeping spell, or you just had a baby, do what is most comfortable and pleasant for everyone to get sleep. We all have different opinions on how kids and babies should sleep, but at the end of the day, you are the parent and need to do what works for everyone. I have become less regimented with sleeping arrangements with each child I have. If I have to have the baby sleep with me, or sleep with my son so we can sleep, I’ll do it.
Sugar and Processed Foods
Sugar found in fruit is much different from sugar in cookies, cakes, candies, donuts, and processed foods. Our bodies have an innate way to process foods from the earth. Foods that are man-made create major challenges for our digestion and overall health. Look for convenient ways to incorporate as many whole foods as possible into everyone’s diets. In the organic or gluten-free sections of the freezer aisle, you can find healthy kids’ foods like dinosaur nuggets made with greens or tater tots made from sweet potatoes. Get fruits and veggies that are already cut up if you don’t have time to prepare. It’s ok to cut corners and have things less perfect if it means you can get whole foods into your meals!
Hydration
Drink plenty of water and non-caffeinated beverages during the day. If you can get most of your water consumption in before the middle of the day, you’ll feel more energized in the afternoon. Hydration also helps all the water-soluble vitamins make their way through your cells. Many times, our symptoms or lack of energy comes from dehydration. This book is a great resource for explaining that. I also believe in focusing on mineral-rich, gut-healing drinks. I wrote an ebook that provides recipes, videos, and guidance on taking your favorite drinks and making them into healing elixirs.
