A little over a week ago, I lost my voice due to a virus. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to talk. Sometimes having a change in your voice is a sign of deeper issues. I have become a firm believer in the energetics of our being. The properties of energy, and the way in which it is redistributed in physical, chemical, or biological processes amazes me. I am in the early stages of understanding the chakras of the body. The throat chakra and its connection to the thyroid has been a major consideration in my healing.
When I Lost My Voice
There was a time when I was literally and figuratively losing my voice. Physically, my voice was extremely raspy in the morning, and remained somewhat hoarse all day. This is a clear symptom of thyroid dysfunction. My severe fatigue, joint pain, mood swings, sensitivity to cold, and other physical symptoms persisted as well. In my relationships, I had lost my ability to speak up; to communicate my needs. I felt buried, but couldn’t put a finger on why or how to fix it. It was the physical symptoms that eventually lead me to discovering my thyroid was under active. It wasn’t until later that I realized the effect of the energetic symptoms. The loss of communication, negative talk, and lack of self-expression; those are the energetic symptoms connected to thyroid dysfunction.
The Throat Chakra
It’s true that I had to overhaul my diet, detoxify my body’s pathways, and support my body with herbal supplements and vitamins to restart my thyroid. For a time, I had to take Armour thyroid to give me the energy to actually do the work necessary in healing. The physical work was necessary, but in addition to that, I had to start exercising the trapped energy in my throat chakra. Talking more to my spouse and speaking up for what I needed was a major part of my thyroid healing. Not holding back my opinions with others, speaking my truth with love and respect, and making time for my creative outlets were critical to healing as well. These things are not always considered, or even taken seriously. The fact is that they are necessary in improving the condition of your thyroid and overall health.
Why an Integrative Approach to Healing Works
As my teacher at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Josh Rosenthal, once said, “What we are discussing here is post-modern medicine. The idea that our health goes beyond what we eat or do for exercise is still a far-reaching concept.” If there is one thing I can tell you in regard to the journey I’ve been on over the last three years, it’s that true healing happens because those “other areas” of life are considered. Integrative Nutrition requires us to evaluate every area of our life. If a person is experiencing stress with their finances, drinking green juice can’t fix that. The stress, tension, and dissatisfaction that is going wreaks havoc on the body. The body loses it’s natural flow and its ability to rest and digest. If there are other worries lingering in the back of the mind all day, that flow is disrupted. We have to tackle those areas as well. Your health depends on it.
