“Health coach” typically makes people think of an individual who calls you from your health insurance company, but that’s not what I do. A certified Holistic Health Coach, or in my case an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach is someone who works with you in an independent contract to accomplish specific health goals. Initially, when you choose a path of natural healing, there will be frustration, doubt, and general annoyances. There will be really good days, and really bad days. The ups and downs are necessary as you venture toward gaining balance, but with commitment, you’ll experience healing.
Over four years ago, I was at the beginning of my own health journey; to heal my thyroid. When I would come across certain health-related articles, I’d growl at the twenty-step recipe given at the end. Then I would see videos of women in completely white kitchens appearing to be doing a photo shoot for Vogue, but then discover that they were actually cooking. I was totally turned off and beyond tired from an under active thyroid. It was all I could do to take care of my son, help my husband run his business, and try to get better. I needed simplicity and I needed support.
Good news; that’s what you’ll find here. Avoiding complication is the name of my game. I don’t cook in completely white kitchens with fancy clothes on. I wear Chewbaca t-shirts, and there’s rarely time for pants.
Someone to Hold Up the Mirror
The place where I am today, as in my physical, mental, and emotional condition, are because of tackling some inconvenient truths. There are things about me that had to change in order for me to get better. I was aware of some of it, but what really helped was to have an outside confidante hold up a mirror for me; my health coach Frederick. My health coach enabled me to not only consider the physical foods I was eating, but also see how other areas of my life feed me. Because of the powerful, healing journey I’ve been on, I became a certified health coach to help others heal in the ways I have.
This way of approaching the root causes of health issues is challenging, but what lasting changes come from ease and complacency? There has to be some grit when you’re digging yourself out. I’ve had cases where people don’t want to see the causes for their issues because it’s overwhelming. I understand the feelings behind the thought of “how am I going to get better,” or “am I really ever going to get better?”
A Walk of Healing
Yes, you will get better, but when you choose this path, there has to be patience. There has to be the understanding that working with a health coach is not like taking a pill.
Getting your health back is a journey, and there's only one way to travel: walking.Click To TweetIt’s just like how you would eat an elephant; one bite at a time.
Ultimately, I can only process so much of the elephant, and so I’ll only be able to eat so much of the elephant each day. This is the analogy I share with my clients. Slow and steady, bite by bite, you figure this all out.
Everything is Fixable
I remember where I was physically, mentally, and emotionally when my thyroid tanked. It wasn’t a pretty place to be.
Did certain food that I was eating have something to do with it? Yes.
Was I doing something wrong in regard to physical activity? Yes.
Were there other problems within my lifestyle choices? Yes.
Was there a problem in a specific area of my life? Yes. There were several problems.
Were my problems the result of me being ignorant? Yes.
Were my problems the result of me not speaking up for myself? Yes.
Was everything fixable? Absolutely.
So, I get it. I understand if you’ve felt the way I did, and if you’ve doubted the idea of holistic healing. Perhaps you’ve thought there’s too much “fluff” when it comes to this realm of hope and healing. I get it, but you can break free from whatever mold has encapsulated you.
What I Can Promise
Lastly, I can promise you at this moment one thing: If you are not well today, you can start feeling well tomorrow. There is someone who’s been in the same place as you. There’s someone who had difficulties and obstacles, and overcame them by taking it one step at a time. There’s someone who doubted themselves and doubted what they were doing, and made many wrong turns. That someone is me, and I’m pursuing this career as a health coach because I overcame many difficulties with the support of a health coach. I’d be honored to partner with you on a journey to healing.
From my heart,
Lindsay
