I’ve been seeing something a lot on social media and TV: it’s becoming more popular for women my age and younger (much younger!) to get cosmetic procedures and other skin procedures done to themselves. I’m not cutting on anyone personally who does it. That’s not what this is. It’s just that as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, and as someone who advocates for genuine self-care and wellness, I have to weigh in. I’m in the midst of witnessing this growing trend, and I have some better alternatives to offer in building collagen and elasticity in your skin.
From the Inside Out
A lot of these cosmetic changes are being done to the face. Plumping lips, getting rid of wrinkles, etc. This all really comes down to loss of collagen and dehydration. There are a few easy things that we can do to help out our skin that aren’t so drastic. These things also help our nails, hair, and even our teeth.
1. Drink plenty of water and healthy fluids like herbal tea, green juice, etc. Most of us are dehydrated. If you’re like me, and you’re basically playing racquetball for 16 hours a day with children, careers, houses, pets, adulting in every way possible, etc. then it’s easy to let dehydration happen. We have to really try to do better with this; me included. Green juice, for example, is awesome for your skin. It oxygenates the blood and gives skin that rosy glow. It’s also detoxifying, which is critical for healthy skin as well. Filtered water/spring water with lemon or herbal teas are also great for detox. Jasmine tea is another awesome choice.
2. Minimize alcohol, caffeine, and sugar in your fluids and foods. These things in excess age us, so take it easy. They also contribute to the whole dehydration issue. We want healthy sex hormones, and things like too much alcohol, caffeine, and processed sugar encourage hormonal imbalance. No bueno for your period, thyroid, or your skin. For more details on that, you can check out my healing drinks ebook.
3. Incorporate healthy forms of collagen. It’s so easy to do that now! There are many high quality collagen powders like this one that you can add to your coffee or tea in the morning. Then, there’s a more refreshing strawberry lemonade option for the warmer weather upon us. You just mix the powder with water and you’re good to go. Bone broth is another great source of collagen that greatly improves the appearance of your skin. I’ve experienced this for myself. Bring on the collagen and minerals. Any of these options will be great for you.
4. Help your body produce collagen with vitamin C. Vitamin C offers antioxidant power and has a strong role in your body making collagen. This all adds up to a youthful appearance. It’s important to eat or drink plenty of fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C. Our bodies need replenished with vitamin C because it’s water soluble: we pee it out. This also supports how we need plenty of fluids in our day so we absorb the vitamin C in the first place. This vitamin may prevent and treat sun damage to your skin due to the ascorbic acid. I have personally experienced this! Here’s a great vitamin c supplement if you’re not sure you get enough each day. We need at least 75-120 mg each day.
