I wanted to write about these 3 things that bring healing because I did them myself.
Rewind to November of 2014. It had been two weeks since starting a protocol of eating and taking supplements. This protocol was provided to me by my health coach. She wanted me to do things like incorporate sea vegetables into my diet, stay away from gluten, drink a large amount of filtered, spring water, and make time to relax every night before bed. There were other things on my list, but generally, I was to nourish myself in ways that I hadn’t for a long time, or maybe even never before.
I gave it two weeks. Here’s the words in my head. “It’s not working. I better find someone else to help me.” Two weeks. It’s easy to sit here and shake my head at how impatient I was. This is just the conditioning of our time. We get everything else instantly, so why can’t we heal instantly? It’s like that brat in Willy Wonka. She wants it now.
I’m writing this because I have clients who look at me, and I know what they’re thinking. I know how it feels to be sitting there, and doubting the process. It’s foreign. It’s unsettling to approach illness in a way outside of conventional methods. There’s factors such as lack of measurement or prescription. There’s no white coats, and there’s an overwhelming amount of doubt. This brings me to my first point.
You Must Believe in the Intelligence of Your Body to Heal
I’ll never forget how confused I was when my first health coach told me that it wasn’t really a big deal. She assured me that my body knew exactly what to do, and once I did the right things, I’d be fine. I almost laughed. In my head I thought, “Oh yeah..that’s why I feel like I’m dying…my genius body has it all figured out.” What I didn’t understand was that after years of neglect (that I didn’t realize was neglect), stress, too much caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and crappy food (that I didn’t realize was crappy) my body was truly fighting for me. It had gotten to a point where it sounded a siren to get my attention. That siren was my thyroid. Everyone has a different siren. Maybe it’s something with your ovaries, or severe migraines. It doesn’t really matter because it all goes back to one thing; your body has been neglected and it’s begging you to give it what it needs. You must believe that when you give your body what it needs, then it slowly starts to heal.
You Must Take Consistent Pointed Action to Heal
That phrase, “consistent pointed action,” is from my teacher, Joshua Rosenthal, at IIN. Getting better doesn’t happen quickly when you decide to take the natural route. It takes considerable time and consistent effort. Consistency is really the key to it all. The little things are actually the big things. Decided to eat an apple instead of buy a candy bar? That’s awesome. That apple gave you vitamin C, fiber, and pulled metals from your body. The candy bar would have fed cancer cells and helped degrade a tooth.
These little actions you do everyday are the superstars, the fairy dust, and the foundation of you getting better. Click To TweetYou Must Care For Yourself in a Way Like You’ve Probably Never Done Before
You let your work overpower your lunch break today. Eating donuts in the afternoon, you drank a huge coffee, and went home feeling like crap. Your blood sugar level feels wrecked, and your energy crashes. What can you do to help yourself from the hurting? How can you turn the ship around? How about a big glass of water, a nice, relaxing bath, and an early bedtime? Realizing the sting of your neglect, the next day is better. You eat well, go for a walk, and get to bed at a decent time. Each time you sting yourself, you get better at caring for yourself. You realize that the little, nurturing things you do regularly make an incredible difference in how you feel, and that the little bad things make you feel horrible. The awareness grows, and self-care becomes your haven.
We are human, and bad days happen. The key here is to always be prepared to redeem yourself and give yourself love. The more you are gentle with yourself, and the more you realize the power of showing up for your health, the better/faster you will heal.
Patience is a Part of Healing
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.” I have that quote on my coaching agreement. I put it there because it’s probably the most important thing I want people to understand. Being impatient is what delayed my healing. I doubted the process. If I would have just kept going with that first plan that Janet (my first health coach) gave me, I would have healed a year earlier than I did. That’s ok, because now I can tell you not to make the mistake I did.
