Someone telling me that problems are blessings could have totally irritated me at the beginning of having hormonal imbalance and hypothyroidism. Now I understand the notion.
It was October of 2014, and I had a problem. With a laundry list of unpleasant symptoms, I was leaving an endocrinologist’s office and fighting back tears. After an hour appointment with the doctor, I was told we’d wait 6 months and “see what happens.” A diagnosis of sub-clinical hypothyroidism left me with a problem and no viable solution. The doctor told me that thyroid disease is genetic, and until my lab numbers indicated total hypothyroidism, there wasn’t much to do.
I asked if there was anything I could do in regard to my diet or lifestyle. I”ll never forget the look on his face. He said, “You’re an idiot,” without having to actually say it. “No, there’s nothing you can do that will change the condition.”
Three years later, I’m here to tell you that’s not true.
Your Questions Are Everything
Not receiving medication or being sent for a treatment of some type was the best thing that could have every happened to me that day. From that hopeless and dark place I would go on a very unexpected journey. From the time I walked out of the doctor’s office without answers, I had nothing but questions. Those questions lead me to researching far and wide.
They lead me back to a holistic health coach who had helped me overcome irritable bowel. That experience then lead me to finding a man who introduced me to things like grass-fed dairy, pasture-raised meats, the importance of eating organic, and bone broth. From there, I met another holistic health coach who I worked with for 14 months. During that time, I walked into the wrong situation with a hormone doctor, which then sent me into the arms of a holistic nutritionist. All the while, my health coach encouraged me to listen to that voice, keep asking the questions, and keep trusting the process. I’m glad to say that I did. I’m glad to have had the problem.
Solutions Are Usually More Simple Than You Think
When it comes to health, things can get very complicated. It doesn’t have to be that way. Throughout my own journey, as well as during the time I studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, there’s one thing that has really stuck out. If you just focus on the basics, and do them consistently, you will see results. We tend to complicate things, and it’s totally unnecessary. There’s a lot to be said for drinking plenty of water, eating the right food, being active, working at relationships, and taking action on your intuition. Each day is chance to take a step or two. Pretty soon, all those steps add up.
