What is scary to us, we naturally try to stay away from. Being scared has taken away a lot of time in my life: overanalyzing, worrying, avoiding, delaying, and just staying comfortable wastes time and energy. Furthermore, what really comes of being comfortable all the time? To each his own, but if you really want to feel alive, then get away from being comfortable and do something scary.
Fluffing
Mastin Kipp said it perfectly when I listened to one of his webinars a year or so ago. “When we are afraid to do what we need to do, we tend to fluff. Fluffing is when you do things that are skirting around what you really need to be doing.” How many times have you “fluffed?” Are you fluffing right now? I am guilty of this often. I sat on this website for a year. Did I need to do that? Absolutely not. I could have had it up and running in a weekend, but I didn’t! Going over every little thing, I would double, triple, and quadruple check things. I was delaying the process. It was scary to me to put myself out there. It still is! The truth is, the things that feel scary, we need to do. That feeling of being scared is a special type of recognition within you; it’s a signal that you’re approaching the right place.
How to Stop Avoiding the Scary Stuff
- Do one small action to chip away at the fear. For example, if you want to lose weight, but you’re afraid of how your peers will be affected by your new lifestyle, start by walking everyday.
- Surround yourself with people who support you. For those who don’t support you, be clear and truthful in your words and actions. If they are giving you trouble about taking action toward something you want, then you need to question their intentions and so-called love.
- Surround yourself with people who share the same interest(s). If you want to write, then follow writers on social media. Connect with people who have done the things you want to do.
- Create an affirmation to say to yourself when fear is taking over. An example would be, “I have the same chance as anyone else to accomplish my goal/dream. Ultimately, it will come down to my decisions and actions.” This leads to number 5.
- You are one decision away from overcoming your fear. Your power lies in the choices you make each day. Choices are what lead to action, so what will go in motion? Will you surf Facebook for hours, or will you stop consuming and start making, creating, and being? The choice is yours!
Speaking of which….
